≈World Religion Day≈
Science,Religion & Development As The Foundation For Global Prosperity

So that was the theme of the discourse on 22nd February at UEM Academy,PJ. Those who were there had a great opportunity of deliberation on this issue with the 3 speakers Dr. K. J. John, Prof. Dato Dr. Ab. Rahim Selamat and Dr. Irene Leong.

As a vision of society, the relentless pusuit of wealth in an impersonal marketplace and the frenetic experimentation with various forms of self-indulgence are being rejected as irrelevant to the awakening of hopes and energies of individuals in all parts of the planet. It is no longer possible to maintain the belief that the approach to social and economic progress to which the materialistic conception of life has given rise is capable of leading humanity to the tranquility and prosperity which it seeks.

The difficulties encountered during almost five decades of development work, particularly the inability to elicit the involvement of the very people that such efforts purport to serve, directly speaks to the need for a new development concepts and models. Existing development strategies and programs fall far short of taking into account those essential spiritual and social dimensions of life so fundamental to human welfare.

Civilization itself does not arise merely from material progress, but rather is defined by and founded upon the ideals and shared beliefs that weld society together. It is this dimension of existence that enriches, ennobles and provides direction to human being. It is this dimension of life that unlocks the creative capacities within human consciousness and safeguards human dignity.

When spiritual principles are fully intergrated into community development activities, the ideas, insights and practical measures that emerge are likely to be those that promote self-reliance and preserve human honor, thereby avoiding habits of dependency and progressively eliminating conditions of gross economic disparity. Recognition of the inseperable connection between material and spiritual aspects of life therefore gives rise to a fundamentally different notion of development!

Modern science looks at science in a non-integrated and non-holistic way.
"Modern science breaks Humpty Dumpty into parts to study him but does not know how to put Humpty Dumpty back together again!"
For that,we need morality and good values found in all religious thinking and being. Spirituality is the inner motivation and drive that makes of us truly religous. True spirituality enables one to observe a life integrated for integrity.
-Dr. K. J. John-

Science, religion and development are inseparable, integrated, hollistic in a continuum not polarized or dichotomous. Each is not more or less important than the others. What we need is more of Rethinking and Redoing or Reengineering about our perception and mistaken certainties about these aspects of life to be wholesome individuals and society.
"Buat baik jangan sekali-sekali,Buat jahat berpada-pada!"
"You must agree to disagree!!"
-Prof. Dato Dr. Ab. Rahim Selamat-

In the light of global developments over the last decade,it is not possible to dismiss the complementary roles of science and religion in the development of societies. The yearning for peace, unity and well-being of our nation has been a driving force behind the evolvement of our educational system which led to a laudable effort to develop a harmonious nation anchored on a belief in and devotion to God.
"A paradigm/shift in the way we think and behave is needed."
"Individual Transformation --> Social Transformation!"
A twofold purpose is needed - Take charge of our own intellectual and Spiritual Development.
The main thrust of education is seen as the instrument to produce a 'good man' - not only to equip individuals with appropiate knowledge and skills but also to produce responsible citizens with strong moral and ethical values who will contribute towards the well-being of society and nation.
It is possible to speak of religion the same way as one speaks of science and then explore the interactions of what that guides to human progress!
-Dr. Irene Leong-

Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the environment and is itself also deeply affected by it. We need a change of heart,a reframing of all our conceptions and a new orientation of our activities. The inward life of man as well as his outward environment have to be reshaped.

♥♫ Moulin Rouge ♫♥

In 1899, a young British writer, Christian (Ewan McGregor), moves to the Montmartre district of Paris with few possessions beyond histypewriter to try to establish himself in the Bohemian culture. By luck, he encounters a musical troupe led by Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) that is attempting to present a new play for Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent), the owner of the cabaret, the Moulin Rouge. Christian's writing helps to finalize the show, entitled "Spectacular! Spectacular!", and the troupe take Christian to the cabaret to present the work itself to its star courtesan, Satine (Nicole Kidman), in private to win her favour. However, the same night, Zidler has arranged for Satine to spend the night with the wealthy Duke (Richard Roxburgh) who is looking to buy the cabaret. Through miscommunication, Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke, and the two depart to her private chambers. She begins to seduce him despite his insistence he is only there to present his script, but the two slowly realize they have fallen in love with each other. The Duke returns, and discovers Christian and Satine in a compromising position. Satine quickly states that Christian is only there to present a play. With the help of the troupe, Satine, and Zidler, Christian quickly improvises a new plot to "Spectacular! Spectacular!" as a thinly-covered veil of their current situation, with an evil maharajah attempting to woo the love of an Indian courtesan who is actually in love with a poor sitar player. The Duke, unable to see through the show's meaning, agrees to finance the show, but only if he is allowed to continue to see Satine. Unfortunately for the Duke, Satine and Christian continuously make up excuses as to why he can't see her.

Over the next several days, the entire Moulin Rouge troupe prepares for the show as the club is turned into a theater. Christian and Satine attempt to evade the Duke to keep their love alive by pretending to be practicing their lines as well as the "secret song" that the sitar player and courtesan share, but the Duke insists that he can watch. On a day that the Duke has invited Satine to his place for the evening, Satine insists that she must practice her lines with Christian, and they depart. Later Nini-Legs-In-The-Air (Caroline O'Connor), a jealous courtesan, points out to the Duke that the play is obviously a metaphor for Christian, Satine, and the Duke. The Duke takes drastic steps to make sure that Christian and Satine are separated, demanding that Zidler let Satine spend the night with him. On that night, Satine refuses the Duke's advances and flees to Christian; the two plan to run away together. The Duke reports this to Zidler, and states that unless Satine is his, he will have Christian killed. Zidler tells this to Satine and he finally tells her that she is dying from tuberculosis. Satine sadly makes her way back to Christian's loft and claims that she wants the Duke's wealth more than Christian's love. Heartbroken, Christian follows Satine back to the Moulin Rouge and calls for her, only to be beaten by two men and refused entry.

On the opening night of "Spectacular! Spectacular!", Toulouse-Lautrec tries to remind Christian of the Bohemian way — truth, beauty, freedom, and love — and that he truly loves Satine as she does him, but Christian is too depressed to listen. As the show starts, Christian approaches Satine, trying to buy her love using money he made by selling his typewriter just as the Duke had done, but Satine tries to send him away, fearing that the Duke's bodyguard will kill him. Suddenly, the two find themselves in the spotlight on stage, momentarily confusing the performers and audience. Zidler quickly improvises, stating that Christian is the sitar player in disguise and trying to make the show go on, but Christian walks off stage. As he leaves the theater, Toulouse-Lautrec shouts from the rafters "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." Satine realizes what she has done and sings the "secret song," showing Christian that she truly loves him. Christian rejoins her on stage and joins her in singing the song, angering the Duke. The Duke's bodyguard attempts to kill Christian, but the courtesans and Bohemians stop him; the Duke then tries to finish the job himself, only to be stopped by Zidler, who disarms the Duke so true love can prevail. The lovers are able to finish their song without incident to a standing ovation; the Duke storms away from the Moulin Rouge. As the performers get ready for taking a bow, Satine finally succumbs to her illness, and dies in Christian's arms. A year later, with the Moulin Rouge having closed down, Christian, still mournful over his loss, decides to write the story of the love shared between himself and Satine, which was her dying wish.

>> A Walk To Remember <<

Each Spring in the little port town of Beaufort, North Carolina, when the wind smells of pine and salt and the sea, Landon Carter remembers his senior year at Beaufort High and Jamie Sullivan, the girl who changed his life.

Jamie was the last person Landon was likely to fall for. Serious and conservative, she was as far from cool as she could possibly be, and didn’t care. The daughter of the town’s Baptist minister, Jamie was not afraid of letting people know that her faith was the most important part of her life, even if it cost her some friends. Landon hung with the in-crowd -- an aimless, moody, reckless guy who breezed through school on looks and bravado. He had no plans, no future and no faith in himself.

One night a prank that he and his buddies set up goes terribly wrong and lands a kid in the hospital. As punishment, Landon must tutor a young student at a poor school and participate in the Drama Club’s Spring play two activities the principal hopes will teach him some humility. They also happen to throw him into close contact with Jamie. Clearly in over his head, Landon is forced to ask her for help.

Soon, against his own expectations, Landon finds himself falling in love with this outwardly plain girl who possesses a passion for life he never imagined possible. But it isn’t easy. For reasons of her own, Jamie does everything she can to run away from romance until it becomes impossible to deny.

Being together will test everything that they believe in. Most of all, it will test the power of love and faith to transforms a life into something worth living.

I was and am still taken away by this movie everytime I watch it! Never get sick of it no matter how many times I watched it. It shows so much passion and love that it takes my breath away. How much Landon has put effort into giving a miracle to the girl he never expected to fall in love with moves me. Each moment of this movie is worth watching!

God,if this is a fairytale I wish for,let this wish be true!!! =)
